I also asked for a specific medal count for a specific country and got a history of when they first started to compete in the Olympics. I asked for a medal count for 2018, as of today,

not a history of that country.

“Der Hund der Baskervilles” von Arthur Conan Doyle

“Elementary, my dear Watson” – Sherlock Holmes in gekonnter Neuübersetzung von Gisbert Haefs

1887 betrat Sherlock Holmes zum ersten Mal in “Eine Studie in Scharlachrot” die Weltbühne. Mit der Erfindung des exzentrischen Meisterdetektivs revolutionierte Sir Arthur Conan Doyle den Kriminalroman: Beobachtungs- und Kombinationsgabe, Logik und breites Wissen führen zur Lösung rätselhafter und geheimnisvoller Fälle, nicht etwa bloßer Zufall. Holmes’ schwerstes Geschütz ist und bleibt stets sein messerscharfer Verstand. Erzähler der meisten Abenteuer – und damit Vermittler zwischen dem arglosen Leser und dem scharfsinnigen Meisterdetektiv – ist Dr. Watson. Zuverlässiger Gefährte, bester Freund und Mitbewohner des berühmten Apartments in der 221 b Baker Street, London. Als Biograph und Chronist hält der Mediziner die Ermittlungsarbeit seines zuweilen melancholischen Freundes für die Nachwelt fest.

Aus der Weltliteratur und Populärkultur sind Holmes und Watson nicht mehr wegzudenken: Es gibt neben vier Romanen und 56 Kurzgeschichten von Arthur Conan Doyle Gesellschafts- und Computerspiele, zahllose Serien und Verfilmungen, die das Interesse an diesen Figuren immer wieder neu entfachen. Auch bei der Gestaltung von Dr. House aus der gleichnamigen Fernsehserie und seinem besten Freund Wilson standen sie Pate. Doyle hat unsterbliche Figuren erschaffen, die auch künftige Generationen begleiten werden.

Nahezu jeder kennt Holmes’ charakteristische Insignien: Pfeife, Vergrößerungsglas, Invernesmantel und Deerstalker. Dabei trägt er den berühmten karierten Hut, der eigentlich in ländlichen Gegenden bei der Jagd verwendet wurde, in nur drei von 60 Abenteuern. Trotzdem gilt er heute als eines der Markenzeichen der berühmten Spürnase schlechthin. Vermutlich, weil Sidney Paget, Chef-Illustrator der Holmes-Geschichten in der britischen Zeitschrift “The Stand Magazine”, selbst ein Faible für diese Kopfbedeckung hatte.

So hat sie es auch auf das Cover dieses Büchleins aus dem Kein & Aber-Verlag geschafft. Der schwarze Stoffeinband mit der silbernen Prägung wirkt überaus edel. Ein ebenfalls silbernes Lesebändchen, abgerundete Ecken und ein gestochen scharfer Druck machen diese hübsche Ausgabe des Klassikers zum Blickfang im Bücherregal.

“Der Hund der Baskervilles” ist mit korrigiertem Titel in der Übersetzung von Gisbert Haefs erhältlich. Ältere Ausgaben anderer Übersetzer sind noch unter “Der Hund von Baskerville” zu finden. Das suggeriert, dass es sich bei “Baskerville” um einen Ort handelt. Tatsächlich ist es der Name eines Familienclans. Haefs’ Übersetzung folgt dem englischen Original und nimmt Veränderungen überaus behutsam vor. Bestimmte geographische Begrifflichkeiten und Eigenbezeichnungen werden beibehalten. Sind diese im Deutschen nicht ohnehin geläufig, werden sie in den Anmerkungen am Ende des Buches ausführlich erläutert.

Zum Inhalt

Sir Charles Baskerville wird in der Allee vor seinem Landsitz Baskerville Hall in der Region Dartmoor tot aufgefunden. Offenbar hat der alte Herr dort auf jemanden gewartet. Am Tatort finden sich Pfotenabdrücke eines riesigen Hundes. Es heißt, dass ein Fluch auf der Familie laste. Einst verschleppte Sir Hugo Baskerville, ein gewissenloser Trunkenbold, ein Mädchen auf seinen Landsitz, um es zu vergewaltigen. Ihr gelang die Flucht. Doch er bemerkte es, jagte ihr mit seinen Männern nach und hetzte sie schließlich zu Tode. Doch auch er überlebte jene Nacht nicht: Ein riesiger Hund stürzte sich auf ihn und riss ihm die Kehle heraus. Seitdem, so heißt es, vererbe sich der Fluch von einer Generation zur nächsten. Das unheimliche Heulen im Moor sorgt dafür, dass die Erinnerung niemals erlischt…

Der letzte auffindbare Überlebende und Alleinerbe des Anwesens ist Sir Henry Baskerville, der aus Kanada anreist. Der Testamentsvollstrecker fürchtet um das Leben des jungen Mannes und schaltet Sherlock Holmes ein. Wird Sir Henry das letzte Opfer des geheimnisvollen Geisterhundes?

Die Übersetzung bedeutet auch für passionierte Kenner dieses Falles ein großartiges Lesevergnügen!

Übersetzungen im Vergleich

Zur Veranschaulichung hier der Anfang des Romans im englischen Original:

“Mr. Sherlock Holmes, who was usually very late in the mornings, save upon those not infrequent occasions when he was up all night, was seated at the breakfast table. I stood upon the hearth-rug and picked up the stick which our visitor had left behind him the night before. It was a fine, thick piece of wood, bulbous-headed, of the sort which is known as a ‘Penang lawyer.’ Just under the head was a broad silver band nearly an inch across. ‘To James Mortimer, M.R.C.S., from his friends of the C.C.H.,’ was engraved upon it, with the date ‘1884.’ It was just such a stick as the old-fashioned family practitioner used to carry’dignified, solid, and reassuring.”

In der deutschen Übersetzung von Heinz Kotthaus, erschienen beim Ullstein Verlag 1984, liest sich der Absatz folgendermaßen:

“Sherlock Holmes stand gewöhnlich sehr spät auf, wenn er nicht ‘ was gar nicht so selten vorkam die ganze Nacht wach blieb. Diesmal saß er schon zeitig am Frühstückstisch. Ich stand am Kamin und nahm den Stock zur Hand, den unser Besucher gestern Abend zurückgelassen hatte. Es war ein schöner, kräftiger Stock, und er trug dicht unter dem Griff ein fingerbreites Silberband mit der Widmung ‘James Mortimer, M.R.C.S. von seinen Freunden vom C.C.H.’. Im Ganzen ein Stock, wie ihn altmodische Hausärzte besitzen, solid und zuverlässig.”

Demgegenüber ist die Übersetzung von Gisbert Haefs vollständiger und deutlich dichter am Original:

“Mr. Sherlock Holmes, der sehr spät am Morgen aufzustehen pflegte (außer bei den gar nicht seltenen Gelegenheiten, da er die ganze Nacht aufblieb), saß am Frühstückstisch. Ich stand auf dem Kaminteppich und nahm den Stock zur Hand, den unser Besuch am Abend vorher zurückgelassen hatte. Es war ein feines, kräftiges Stück Holz mit Knollenknauf, eines jener Dinger, die als ‘malaiischer Gesetzgeber’ bekannt sind. Ein beinahe zollbreites Silberband saß knapp unter dem Knauf. ‘Für James Mortimer M.R.C.S. von seinen Freunden im C.C.H.’war darauf eingraviert dazu das Datum ‘1884’. Es war genau der Stock, wie ihn ein altmodischer Hausarzt zu tragen pflegt – würdevoll, unverwüstlich und vertrauenerweckend.”

Es macht Spaß, den “Hund der Baskervilles” neu zu entdecken. Für Kenner und Holmes-Neulinge gleichermaßen empfehlenswert. Schön wäre eine komplette Werksausgabe in diesem edlen Format.

Rezension: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – Der Hund der Baskervilles (Kein & Aber 2014)

Klassiker im Taschenformat: Kein & Aber präsentiert Gisbert Haefs’ Neuübersetzung des dritten von vier Sherlock-Holmes-Romanen. Ursprünglich in den Jahren 1901/02 als Serie im “The Strand Magazine” erschienen, hat sich die Geschichte um einen schrecklichen Familienfluch in den nebligen Weiten des britischen Moors längst im Kanon der Kriminalliteratur etabliert. Dr. James Mortimer besucht Holmes und seinen Freund Watson, der die Geschichte aus der Ich-Perspektive erzählt, in London. Holmes schickt Watson mit Henry ins Moor, wo dieser – in Kenntnis der gruseligen Geschichte, mit Watson als Bewacher – sein schweres Erbe antritt.

Watson, der “geborene Mann der Tat”, wie Holmes sagt, unternimmt Nachforschungen, spricht mit den allesamt dubios erscheinenden Gestalten der unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft und berichtet Holmes in Briefen davon, die einen Teil der Erzählung ausmachen. Zu schluchzenden Bediensteten, furchteinflössendem Hundegebell, skurrilen Hobby-Insektenforschern und schleichendem Nebel, gesellt sich zu allem Unheil auch noch eine kleine Liebesverstrickung Henrys und ein entlaufener Massenmörder, der sich im Moor versteckt. Die Sache wird zunehmend verzwickt – Watson setzt das Puzzle zusammen, vermag aber das Bild nicht zu erkennen. Auftritt Holmes. Mit gestählter Deduktionskraft enträtselt er den Fall und legt seine Netze um einen kaltblütigen Mörder.

Arthur Conan Doyle gelingt es in diesem Holmes-Roman hervorragend, das Übersinnliche eines jahrhundertealten Fluchs mit dem ungeschminkten Realismus eines Erbstreites zu verflechten. Diabolisches Höllenfeuer und das Leuchten eines Phosphorpräparats liegen manchmal näher beieinander, als man annehmen möchte.

Über die Figur Sherlock Holmes braucht eigentlich nichts mehr gesagt zu werden. Vielleicht dies: auch wenn seine Lösung des Rätsels nicht unangefochten blieb, wie etwa Pierre Bayards pedantisches, aber bisweilen doch kluges Buch “Sherlock Holmes Was Wrong: Reopening the Case of the Hounds of the Baskervilles” (2008) zeigt, so ist die Art seiner Beweisführung doch einzigartig und bei erstmaligem Lesen der Geschichten höchst verblüffend.

Mit Recht wird dieser Roman zu den unverwüstlichen Wegmarken der Kriminalliteratur gezählt. Er behandelt das Verbrechen auf geschickte Weise als eine intellektuelle Spielerei, ohne ihm dabei seinen Schrecken ganz zu rauben. Denn auch wenn das schlussendlich vor allem ein vergnüglicher Ritt durch die messerscharfen Gedankenketten des S.H. ist, so lässt einen die Kaltherzigkeit und Brutalität des Mörders doch erschaudern.

Die Sprache wirkt bisweilen etwas gestelzt, was Übersetzer Gisbert Haefs in einer Anmerkung so erklärt: “Weiterhin habe ich im Interesse der Gesamtwirkung des Buchs darauf verzichtet, die als Gespräche zwischen überaus gebildeten Viktorianern lesbaren hohen Dialoge herabzumindern, und nur dort, wo es mir unabdingbar schien, vorsichtig Anpassungen des Tempus an deutsche Gepflogenheiten (Perfekt statt Imperfekt vorgenommen.” – Insgesamt sicherlich eine kluge Entscheidung, die, wenn man sich daran gewöhnt hat, dem Gefühl des Originaltextes nahe steht.
