Sandor Clegane
Sandor Clegane © 2012 Miguel Regodón Harkness
Sandor Clegane is a member of House Clegane. He is the younger brother of the current head, Ser Gregor Clegane. He is nicknamed the Hound for his fierce nature and unquestioning obedience to his masters and for the three dogs featured in his family's arms. In the television adaptation Game of Thrones he is played by Rory McCann.
The Hound is considered one of the most dangerous fighters in Westeros. As a child, Sandor received gruesome facial burns when Gregor shoved his face into a brazier. [2] He came to loathe fire, his brother, and the hypocrisy of knighthood in general.
Appearance and Character
Sandor is a huge and heavily-muscled man. The right side of his face is gaunt, with sharp cheekbones and a heavy brow, while the left side is a burned ruin with a stump for an ear. [2] [3] [N 1] Slick black flesh is pocked with craters and deep cracks that ooze red and wet. [2] The scars extend down to his throat. [4] There is a twisted mass of scar around his right eye, which is still good. Sandor's nose is large and hooked, and his long hair is dark and thin and brushed so that it covers the right since no hair grows there. Sandor's eyes are grey and bone shows on his jaw. [2]
Sandor speaks in a rasping voice. [5] He has a temper, [5] but is dutiful. [6]
The Hound regularly wears an olive-green cloak over plain, soot-dark armor [7] and a distinctive helm sculpted into the shape of a snarling dog's head. [5] He also sometimes wears a brown roughspun tunic and studded leather jerkin. [8] Sandor wields a longsword, [9] a warhammer, [10] and a dagger. [11] His stallion is a heavy courser named Stranger. [12]
Sandor's childhood appears to have been overshadowed by his older brother Gregor's brutality and martial prowess. When Sandor was seven, his father explained the burns inflicted by Gregor by claiming his bedding caught fire. [2] There are rumors of a sister who died young in mysterious circumstances, and their father was killed in a hunting accident shortly after King Robert I Baratheon came to the throne, which is also implied to have been suspicious, leaving the family estates to Gregor. [7]
Sandor left to join the Lannister household the same day Gregor came into his inheritance. [7] He claims to have killed a man when he was twelve years old, [13] possibly during Robert's Rebellion, as he was part of Tywin Lannister's host during the Sack of King's Landing. [14] Sandor has never taken a knight's vows. [8]
Ser Barristan Selmy unhorsed Sandor during a tourney a year ago. [15]
Recent Events
A Game of Thrones
Sandor is the bodyguard and servant of Prince Joffrey Baratheon, who regularly calls him "Dog". Queen Cersei Lannister suggests that he looks to the Hound as a surrogate father. En route from Winterfell to King's Landing, Sandor earns the enmity of Arya Stark by acting on Lannister orders to kill her friend Mycah, the son of a butcher, who is believed to have harmed Joffrey. [16]
Sandor rides well during the first day of the Hand's tourney, unhorsing Lord Renly Baratheon. [2] After that night's feast, Joffrey has Sandor escort Sansa Stark back to the Red Keep. Drunk, despite the final jousts the next day, Sandor becomes enamored with Sansa. Angry that she cannot look him in the eye due to his disfigurement, he mocks her for her polished manners, calling her a "little bird" who chirps on command. [2] Sandor defeats Ser Jaime Lannister to advance to the finals. [7] Sandor saves Ser Loras Tyrell from the wrath of his brother, Ser Gregor Clegane, during their joust. He fights heatedly with his brother, but kneels when King Robert I Baratheon commands them to stop. Loras allows Sandor to be the champion without a final joust, and the Hound is cheered by Sansa and the smallfolk. [7]
When Lord Eddard Stark attempts to take Cersei and her illegitimate children into custody with the help of the gold cloaks—unbeknownst to the fact that Commander Janos Slynt is already under the employ of the treacherous Petyr Baelish—Sandor participates in the widespread slaughter of Eddard's remaining household guard alongside his erstwhile allies, personally killing Cayn. [17] The Hound also takes Jeyne Poole into custody, placing her in Sansa's room, after breaking down her door with a warhammer. [10]
After Ser Barristan Selmy is dismissed from the Kingsguard, Sandor is named as his replacement despite refusing to become a knight. [18] In this capacity he is often assigned to watch over Sansa, treating her with relative kindness and trying to spare her from Joffrey's sadism. [19]
A Clash of Kings
Despite his loyalty to the new king, Joffrey I Baratheon, Sandor strategically defends Sansa Stark from Joffrey's wrath many times and is the only Kingsguard who is never commanded to beat her. [8] Sandor is present for the tourney on King Joffrey's name day as Joffrey's bodyguard. He is dismissive of the competitors, calling them gnats, that it would be a waste of effort to compete himself, and that even Joffrey could beat them. [8]
When returning from the Red Keep's godswood after meeting for the first time with Ser Dontos Hollard, Joffrey's new fool, Sansa runs into a drunk Sandor. He admires her blooming womanhood, but sees her as still a "stupid little bird […] singing all the songs they taught you". He asks her to sing "some song about knights and fair maids", and mocks Sansa's admiration of true knights, but she says she will sing for him gladly. Sansa is frightened by him during this encounter, but though he hurts her by grabbing her wrist to stop her from falling, he is also gentle when he protects her from Ser Boros Blount, and she asks Sandor why he does not let anyone call him a knight. When he takes her back unharmed to the Red Keep, he warns her she is surrounded by liars. [20]
After the battle of Oxcross, Joffrey summons Sansa, and Sandor warns her Joffrey is not pleased with her brother, Robb Stark. Sansa says she had no part Robb's treasons, at which Sandor snorts, "They trained you well, little bird." Angry at Ser Stafford Lannister's defeat, Joffrey orders Sandor to beat Sansa, but Dontos interrupts and hits the girl with a melon. Joffrey instead has Boros punch Sansa and strike her with the flat of his sword. When Sandor objects, Joffrey orders Boros to strip Sansa naked, but he is stopped by the arrival of Tyrion Lannister with Bronn and Timett. Tyrion asks for someone to give the half-nude girl something to cover herself, so Sandor tosses his cloak to Sansa. [4]
During the riot of King's Landing, Sandor comes to the aid of Sansa when she is nearly dragged from her horse by the angry mob. Sandor's savage fury and sword fighting drives the mob away from her in fear, saving her from rape and possible murder. [21] Sansa later thanks him, and he tells her "a dog doesn't need courage to chase off rats." When Stannis Baratheon's men burn the kingswood, Sandor tells Sansa "only cowards fight with fire." [9]
Sandor fights heroically during the battle of the Blackwater, leading the defense against a group of Stannis's archers who land on the shores of the Blackwater Rush. [22] Frightened by wildfire, however, he eventually deserts after refusing Tyrion's command to return to the fiery battlefield. [23] Before fleeing King's Landing, Sandor waits for Sansa in her chambers and drunkenly offers to take her with him, but instead settles for a song elicited at knifepoint. [11]
A Storm of Swords
With Ser Mandon Moore drowning at the Blackwater and Sandor fleeing the battle, Ser Loras Tyrell joins the Kingsguard and Ser Boros Blount is restored to the white cloaks. [24] [25]
Ser Jaime Lannister considers Brienne of Tarth to be "the Hound with teats". [26] Arya Stark includes Sandor in her list of those she wants to die. [27] Sansa Stark wishes Sandor was still there and keeps his bloodied Kingsguard cloak hidden in a chest, [24] and she believes that he kissed her the night of the Blackwater. [28] When Sansa is forced to marry Tyrion Lannister, she considers the Imp to be uglier than the Hound. [29]
The Mad Huntsman captures the vagabond Sandor and brings him to Stoney Sept in the riverlands. The Hound is taken into custody of the brotherhood without banners, who also have Sansa's younger sister, Arya. [30] In the hollow hill, the brotherhood put Sandor on trial for various atrocities committed by Lannister soldiers, but no crime can be attributed to him personally until Arya testifies to his killing of Mycah, the butcher's boy. Since there is not enough evidence for a court trial, the brotherhood's leader, Lord Beric Dondarrion, decrees that Sandor will face him in a trial by combat. A follower of R'hllor, Beric fights with a magic flaming blade, and Sandor's left arm is burned when his shield catches fire. Despite his fear of fire, Sandor manages to defeat Beric. [31]
The brotherhood strip Sandor of most of his possessions, including the remains of his winnings from the Hand's tourney, and set him free, though he is allowed to keep his arms, armor and warhorse, Stranger. When several of the brotherhood state that Sandor should be killed, Beric says R'hllor must have a purpose for the Hound. [32] Sandor soon returns to try to reclaim his gold by force, upon which he stumbles across Arya as she tries to escape. He kidnaps her instead [33] and intends to ransom her back to her brother, Robb Stark, the King in the North, who is going to attend the wedding of Lord Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey at the Twins. [34] [35]
Sandor and Arya cross the Trident at flooded Harroway, where the Hound pays outraged ferrymen with a promissory note from Beric instead of gold. [34] They arrive at the Twins [35] shortly before the Red Wedding massacre takes place, however. [36] Amidst the fighting, Sandor kills several men—possibly including Tytos Frey and Garse Goodbrook—and incapacitates Arya to prevent her from running into the massacre. [37] [38]
Sandor hopes to find another relative to whom he can ransom Arya, possibly her aunt, Lysa Arryn, in the Vale. While traveling away from the Twins, Sandor gives the gift of mercy to a Piper archer who was wounded by Boltons during the Red Wedding. [39] Sandor and Arya stay at a village in the foothills of the Mountains of the Moon for a few weeks, but the village elder turns them away after work is finished on a palisade. With the high road to the Eyrie closed, Sandor decides to bring Arya to Ser Brynden Tully, her great-uncle at Riverrun. [39]
Seeking shelter at the inn at the crossroads, Sandor and Arya encounter two of Gregor's men and their squire, who inform them of the siege of Riverrun by House Frey. When the two groups come to blows, Sandor kills Polliver and holds off the Tickler until the torturer is killed by Arya, who also kills the squire. The hungry and inebriated Sandor is seriously injured, receiving wounds on his thigh, ribs, neck, and face, and the stump of his burned ear is sliced off. Though Arya dresses his wounds, they quickly became infected during their journey to Saltpans. Conflicted about her feelings after she leaves him off her list, Arya refuses to grant Sandor the gift of mercy despite his pleas. She rides off, leaving him under a tree by the Trident. [3]
A Feast For Crows
Reports spread of the Hound leading a pack of outlaws in a brutal spree of banditry near the Trident, [40] and there is confusion whether he has joined Beric Dondarrion's brotherhood. [41] Witnesses state a roaring brute in a hound's head helm led the vicious raid on Saltpans. Ser Bonifer Hasty, Ser Kevan Lannister, and Lord Randyll Tarly intend to bring outlaws like Sandor to justice near Darry, Harrenhal, and Maidenpool. [42] [43] [44]
During dinner at Darry, Ser Lyle Crakehall claims to have been moved by the distress of Mariya Darry and Amerei Frey, and gives them his word that once Riverrun has fallen he shall return to hunt down the Hound and kill him for them, adding that dogs do not frighten him. [45]
Seeking Sansa Stark, Brienne of Tarth acts on information that she received from Timeon of the Brave Companions that Sansa had been carried away by the Hound. Her travels with Septon Meribald take her to a septry on the Quiet Isle. The Elder Brother of the monastery informs her that it was the younger sister that Sandor made off with, Arya Stark. The Elder Brother knows they were headed for Saltpans, but he states the Hound is dead, "by the sword, as he had lived" and he buried him personally and left his hound helm as a marker — a mistake, as someone else found and claimed it, and went on, with others, to rape and kill at Saltpans. The Elder Brother tells Brienne she would have pitied Sandor if she had seen him at the end, crying in pain and begging for the gift of mercy. He tells her the Hound died in his arms, and Sandor Clegane is at rest. He also tells her Sandor's big black stallion, Stranger is in their stables. [46]
While at the crossroads inn, Brienne encounters a group of broken men led by Rorge, who wears Sandor's hound helm. [47] Prior to the capture of Harrenhal, Rorge, Biter, and other former Brave Companions had traveled east to seek ship at Saltpans. Rorge had taken Sandor's snarling dog helm from his grave site, and Rorge was responsible for Sandor's alleged atrocities, such as the raid on Saltpans. Rorge is slain in a duel with Brienne. [47]
When the brotherhood returns to the inn, Lem Lemoncloak takes Sandor's helm from Rorge's corpse. Thoros of Myr advises Lem to abandon the helm, seeing it as a symbol of Sandor's rage, but the bitter Lem refuses. This new Hound serves Lady Stoneheart. [48]
With the siege of Riverrun ended, Lyle Crakehall tells Ser Jaime Lannister he is going to hunt down Beric and the Hound. [49]
Gravedigger
Many readers of the series believe that there are hints in what the Elder Brother has said about the Hound to Brienne of Tarth, that the Elder Brother considers "the Hound" to be simply an aspect of Sandor's personality — the same way that “the Cobbler Above” is an aspect of the Smith, who in turn is an aspect of the one God — and that Sandor himself may have survived and is living as a novice on the Quiet Isle's monastery. Some believe Sandor is the novice gravedigger espied by Brienne. [46]
Quotes by Sandor
Sandor: He ran. But not very fast. [16]
Sandor: I like dogs better than knights. A hound will die for you, but never lie to you. And he'll look you straight in the face. [20]
Sandor: There are no true knights, no more than there are gods. If you can't protect yourself, die and get out of the way of those who can. Sharp steel and strong arms rule this world, don't ever believe any different.
Sansa: You're awful.
Sandor: I'm honest. It's the world that's awful. [9]

‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 5 Spoilers: Does The Hound Die?
The Hound dies in "Game of Thrones" season 5. But does Sandor Clegane? That's a trickier question. (Image: HBO)
You might think it's not much of a "Game of Thrones" spoiler to say whether or not the Hound dies in season 5. As we left him in the "Game of Thrones" season 4 finale, he's at the very edge of death, and knows it, when Arya coldly abandons him. However, the actual answer to the question can be a little. complicated. After the break, we'll take a look at what the deal is with The Hound, whether he simply dies, whether we'll ever see him again, and so much more.
On the face of it, the Hound is dead and gone. He came out much the worse for wear in his fight with Brienne, although it's worth mentioning that he accomplished what he set out to accomplish: protecting Arya from someone he earnestly believed, not without reason, was in the service of the Lannisters. It just apparently will cost him his life. And, in fact, it might.
Unlike most "Game of Thrones" season 5 spoilers, there isn't actually a clear answer on whether Sandor Clegane lives or dies. That's not just because the show is changing so much from the books-it's because it's very ambiguous in the books themselves. In the fourth book, "A Feast for Crows," Brienne and Podrick stumble across a place called the Quiet Isle not far from where they are now. The Quiet Isle is essentially a monastery for the Faith, specifically for those who wish to atone for their sins.
The Elder Brother at the monastery talks to Brienne, and they get to discussing the Hound, since they see his lost horse in the stables. The elder claims that the Hound died in his arms and he buried the man himself (essentially, there was a maester behind that rock after all). And he talks extensively about the Hound and how he lived, and how he let hatred motivate him. He speaks like a man who knew Sandor by more than reputation. What's more, the gravedigger at the Quiet Isle-who, like all novices there, keeps his face covered and has taken a vow of silence-more than superficially resembles Sandor. He is even larger than Brienne, and he has a very severe limp possibly consistent with Sandor's wounds.
As the theory goes, the elder is not lying when he says the Hound died. but he isn't exactly telling the truth either. The Hound, in this sense, is just an aspect of Sandor Clegane, the evil and violent part, the part that ran down the butcher's boy and not the part that saved Sansa and protected Arya for so long. It's that evil side who has died, and Sandor is living out his days in silent atonement. Then again, the elder does say he "buried [The Hound] himself," so it's by no means a certainty.
I know what I like to think. I like to think that Sandor survived and is trying to make amends and come to peace with himself. But that's not a "Game of Thrones" season 5 spoiler. It's a hope. The truth of whether Sandor lives or dies remains unknown.

Sek. Fertigkeiten: Eileritter, Beherrschung, Kampfrausch
Vorteil: GrцЯere Ьberlebenschance
Freier Ritter: Offensiver Kдmpfer, der mцglichst viel Schaden zufьgen mцchte, Zweihдndige Waffen bevorzugt, schwere Rьstung, Nahkampf besser als Fernkampf
Hauptfertigkeitsklasse: Beherrschung (Stдrke)
Sek. Fertigkeiten: Elitekrieger, Verteidigung, Geschick
Magnar: Hauptsдchlich Nahkдmpfer, zwei einhдndige Waffen bevorzugt, mittlere Rьstung (dadurch beweglicher, aber auch leichter verletzbar)
Hauptfertigkeitsklasse: Kampfrausch (fьgt цfter Schaden in bestimmter Zeitspanne zu)
Sek. Fertigkeiten: Berserker, Beherrschung, Intensitдt
Stдrke: Mehr Schaden verursachen, hцhere physische Widerstandsfдhigkeit
Gewandtheit: Hцhere Treffsicherheit (Geschwindigkeit und Genauigkeit erhцht), Gegner treffen weniger hдufig,
Glьck: Mehr Beute finden, eher Ausweichen, kritische Treffer hдufiger
Seitenquest Ihre Wache endet:
Verdдchtige: Bartram, Domeric, Jonos, Trebor, Grant und Arthur
Kampf gegen die Verrдter, die eure Mдnner bestechen wollten:
Kampf gegen Arwins Mдnner:

Put on the computer what the public asks for, not everything about the US.
I asked for a total medal count. I have been looking for 20 minutes and still cannot find it.
I also asked for a specific medal count for a specific country and got a history of when they first started to compete in the Olympics. I asked for a medal count for 2018, as of today,
not a history of that country.
You don't even accept what I have asked.

‘Game Of Thrones’ Who Is Who? The Photo Guide

Helen Sloan/HBO
Robert Baratheon (far left) was King in Season 1 of ‘Game of Thrones,’ but he died after being impaled by a boar’s tusk during a hunt. In Season 2, his middle brother, Stannis, Baratheon (center) began pursuing the crown. So did Robert and Stannis’…

Helen Sloan/HBO
The late King Robert Baratheon (left) had many illegitimate children, including Gendry (right), who has the dark hair that all Baratheon children do (something Ned Stark discovered in Season 1).

Helen Sloan/HBO
The Stark Family: Ned Stark, Catelyn Stark (nee Tully), Robb Stark, Sansa Stark, Arya Stark and Brandon Stark. Another child of Ned and Catelyn’s is Rickon. He is not pictured.

Helen Sloan/HBO
The Stark children were also raised with a half brother — Jon Snow (second from left) — whose mother is unknown.

Catelyn Stark and her two siblings — Edmure Tully (center) and Lysa Arryn (far right).

Brynden ‘The Blackfish’ Tully, who appeared in Season 3 (but left before the events of The Red Wedding), is the uncle of Catelyn, Edmure and Lysa, and the great uncle of Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon.

Helen Sloan/HBO
Jaime (left) and Cersei Lannister (middle) are twins. Tyrion Lannister (right) is their younger brother.

Helen Sloan/HBO
Tywin Lannister is the father of Jaime, Cersei and Tyrion, and grandfather to King Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen

Jaime (left) and Cersei (far right) brought three children into the world: Joffrey (second from left), Myrcella (third from left) and Tommen. King Robert thought all three children were his. He was wrong.

Myrcella, Cerei’s daughter, was sent off to Dorne in Season 2. Season 4’s Prince Oberyn Martell is from Dorne.

Paul Schiraldi/HBO
Sansa Stark (left) was engaged to Joffrey Baratheon (right).

Helen Sloan/HBO
But, Sansa ended up marrying Joffrey’s uncle Tyrion in Season 3, making her by marriage, Sansa Lannister (as Jaime pointed out in Season 4).

Sandor Clegane, aka The Hound, is the brother of Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain.

Helen Sloan/HBO
Balon Greyjoy (far left) is the King of the Iron Islands and the father of Theon Greyjoy and Yara Greyjoy.

Margaery Tyrell and Ser Loras Tyrell are siblings.

Lady Olenna is the grandmother to Margaery Tyrell and Ser Loras Tyrell.

Before his death, Renly Baratheon was married to Margaery Tyrell.

Helen Sloan/HBO
Renly Baratheon’s true love was Ser Loras Tyrell, the Knight of the Flowers.

Brienne (right) served Renly Baratheon until his death in Season 2.

After Renly’s death, Brienne pledged to serve Catelyn Stark, Ned Stark’s widow.

Helen Sloan/HBO
Tyrion met the sellsword Bronn in Season 1. Bronn eventually came to King’s Landing with Tyrion and served him (for coin), until things changed in Season 4.

Helen Sloan/HBO
In addition to Bronn, Tyrion had a squire — Podrick Payne (far right). The trio parted ways in Season 4.

Helen Sloan/HBO
In order to save Podrick from Tyrion’s enemies, Jaime Lannister put Brienne in charge of Podrick Payne (right), and sent them off together to continue the quest for Sansa Stark in Season 4.

Jon Snow met a Wildling woman named Ygritte and fell in love with her.

Helen Sloan/HBO
Tormund Giantsbane is another Wildling.

Helen Sloan/HBO
Mance Rayder is the King Beyond the Wall. A former Night’s Watch member who defected, he now leads the Wildlings (like Ygritte)

Members of the Night’s Watch: Jon Snow, Samwell Tarly and Lord Commander Mormont, aka The Old Bear.

Fans who connect the dots know that The Old Bear (Lord Commander Mormont) is the father of Ser Jorah Mormont (right).

‘Game of Thrones’: Meet the Hound, Scottish actor Rory McCann

The Hound is alive and well in the North. At least for now.
Rory McCann, known to fans of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” as Sandor “The Hound” Clegane, strolls into the parking lot of a popular climbers’ haunt in the heart of town. The large Scotsman looks every bit the rugged outdoorsman coming in from a Highland winter, dressed in layers of wool, goose down and tweed. Yet his demeanor warms when he smiles, explaining the morning’s adventure in his native Scottish brogue.
“My car won’t start. I had to park it back there on a hill so I can get it going on the roll,” he said. “I may need a push.”
Born and raised in Glasgow, McCann, 44, is home in the northern Scottish Highlands, even mooring his sailboat in a region known as Wester Ross — almost the identical name of the fictional continent, Westeros, at the center of HBO’s hit fantasy series. Yet beyond his size, a nomadic lifestyle and solitary tendencies, he doesn’t see many parallels with his fearsome character, long a fan favorite of the popular genre drama based on the writings of George R.R. Martin.
“The Hound is a tortured soul, bullied as a child and forced to be a bodyguard for someone he doesn’t like. I can’t say I relate, much,” he said and laughed. “Though it was meant to be. You know, my name McCann actually translates from ‘canis,’ or ‘canine.’ I am a hound.”
McCann’s path to bad-boy sworn shield is the stuff struggling actors envy. Broke and hitchhiking through Llanberis Pass, Wales, in 1987, he came across the “Willow” movie set and an extra casting call for two tall men to play drunks. At 6 feet, 6 inches, McCann got a spot.
“Unfortunately, I didn’t understand how serious the whole business was and I kept laughing during takes,” he said. “I was eventually chucked off the set.”
Still, McCann was inspired by the experience, and he sought an agent in Glasgow. But acting work was hard to come by for a then-untrained actor, and he spent the next several years working as a forester, tree surgeon, bouncer and even a painter on the iconic Forth Rail Bridge.
Finally, he got a call from Scott’s Porage Oats, which was looking for an actor to portray the man on its package in a series of television commercials. A dead ringer, McCann soon found local fame as the strapping Porage Oats man, strutting around wintry scenes in a kilt — and sometimes less — kept toasty by his porridge.
A few years later he landed his first real break, a role in the BAFTA-nominated Scottish comedy “The Book Group.” The show was the brainchild of American filmmaker Annie Griffin, whom McCann once took climbing. While in the mountains with Griffin he shared tales of his outdoor adventures, including the dramatic story of his near-fatal accident in 1990.
Climbing solo, he’d gotten stuck on an overhanging rock face in Yorkshire, holding on until his strength gave out. He dropped more than 70 feet, breaking both ankles, an arm, a wrist and fracturing his skull. With the help of a friend who saw the fall, he lived to tell the tale.

Months after their climb, Griffin sent him a script for the newly developed show, inviting him to play the part of Kenny McLeod, a former climber who became a paraplegic in a fall.
“Reading the script, I couldn’t believe it. Those were my stories, my experiences, my fall, but with an alternate outcome,” McCann said. “Of course I took the part.”
A self-described man’s man, he chooses to live a mostly lone, transient lifestyle, a choice that allows him to fully enjoy the stunning hills, glens and lochs of the region. He says one acting job can sustain him for a year or more as he moves between his sailboat and trailer, hiking, climbing and camping wherever the mood takes him.
“This place feeds my soul,” he said, leaning forward to look up at Buachaille Etive Mor, covered in a fresh coat of January snow. “I’m blessed.”
As for “Game of Thrones,” most of what happens in Season 3 remains shrouded in mystery. While his character is in one of many story threads slowly unspooling this season, McCann hints the Hound’s role is just getting going and will later include an action-packed fight scene that required daily practice for nearly three weeks.
“You’ll be seeing a lot more of the Hound, big time,” he said of the series, which airs the season’s fifth episode Sunday. “They’ve developed him a lot slower and made him a bit softer on the show than in the books, but I quite like how it’s all unfolding. There’s a good story now, and it definitely gets more exciting with big fights and a lot more horse riding. These are the Hound’s biggest scenes yet, and you’ll definitely get to know him a bit more.”
In a hint about a climactic flaming sword fight with Beric Dondarrion, he added: “Let’s just say I end up slightly singed. Not great. A big, angry, singed dog.”
McCann began reading Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series around the time of his audition, taking the first book into the woods where “you’re meant to read it, around a fire, at night, in the drizzle,” he said. “It’s a wonderful, magical, epic series, and I’m totally honored to be a part of it.”
He’s read as far as book four, “A Feast for Crows,” and suggests there will be several more surprises for fans.
“I see the show peeling away from the books,” he said. “I don’t think you really know who will go now or what will happen. There are whole new extra scenes that don’t exist in the books.”
One thing he readily acknowledges is there will continue to be suspense. “When [the cast] sat down to read the scripts this season we were on the edge of our seats,” he recalled. “Each episode ends with a cliffhanger, and after reading a couple of episodes they’d ask if we wanted a break. We would all say, ‘No, no, let’s keep going!’ It’s that intense.”
As for his part, McCann says he’s happy with the scope and development of his character, and he’s optimistic the Hound will hang around a little longer.
“I’ve got a feeling they’ll write additional scenes for the Hound in the next seasons,” he said. “Or at least the next season since you never know, people do have a way of disappearing on this show.”

OMG, this is such a great interview ! Covered a lot of his life in a concise and cohesive manner ( For once ) and even though he is on a top rated HBO series you took the time to cover more than just Game of Thrones, Kudos to Jen Boyer for one of the best Rory interviews in some time ! Thank you so much for this !
You're very welcome! I had a wonderful time getting to know him. Even got a little tour of Glencoe from a native's perspective. Glad you all like it.
Michael Armstrong, the supermarket stockboy from Hot Fuzz. I’m not sure why McCann even had to audition for the role of the Hound instead of just being handed it outright.
Amen! I was all the way through the first season before I recognized him!
Wonderful interview with a lovely man! Thanks so much for this!
The Book Group, a great series and very funny, recommended viewing.
McCann was one of many great characters that made up that very enjoyable show.
What a lovely gentleman. My only slight issue is that I can't fit Rory the mild-mannered roving Scotsman into my head at the same time as the slightly psychotic grumpy guss Hound. All that happens is I picture the Hound in tweed and tartan and then I start laughing uncontrollably.
Cetainly the only thing more intriguing than the Hound himself is the man behind character. Good read! Nice pic, too!!
Loved the article! The Hound is a wonderful character made even better by great acting! I have had a crush on the Hound…a brave man, a hard man, yet with a heart he almost lets you see…I know know a big part of that is Mr. McCann himself.
I agree completely! Suddenly realized I had fallen hard for The Hound somewhere in Season 2, and watching the episode in which he walks away from the battle of the Blackwater, just seeing his face change as burning men fell all around him was so moving I was just breathless. It’s wonderful to see this interview with Rory McCann that gives The Hound the recognition he deserves. And Mr.McCann too, of course, for bringing him to life!
I notice that my comment is “awaiting moderation.” My subscription has been established so I don’t know what this statement means. What kind of moderation is needed? Can someone post a Reply to this, and let me know? Thanks so much…
Love the Hound!! He's such a big softie, protecting Arya, hope he stays that way. Nicely understated.
Fell in love with Sandor Clegane when I watched him fight his brother to save Loris. I feel so much empathy for his character. A Hound that's been kicked around enough becomes unsocialized and snarly at times, but his eyes too often betray a desire to be kind and accepted. Sandor Clegane to the end of GoT series!! Please?? Lovely interview. Sounds like a beautiful life for a beautiful man. That suit though…..think my dad wore something like that in the '70's. <s>
I want to live on Rory's sailboat.
The Hound is one of the best acted characters in the show. That beast scares the hell out of me every time. He should be right by Daenerys' side when the final battle against the white walkers come if humans are to stand a chance. http://lerageshirts.com/i-am-not-a-princess-i-am-…
Awesome interview! New appreciation for "The Hound", or at least the man who plays him. One of my "baby's" nicknames is the hound. My babies don't know they are yellow Labrador retrievers so that is a HUGE compliment. And I know the true definition of huge. My husband is 6 ft 6 in. Almost as big as Rory ;) The show is awesome and I can't wait to see how things deviate from the book even more. Thanks for the heads up (wish I'd seen this sooner).

One of the craziest 'Game of Thrones' fan theories may actually come true this season
Skye Gould/Tech Insider Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Game of Thrones," including speculation of future events.
By now, most fans know that HBO's hit show, "Game of Thrones," is based on an original book series by George R.R. Martin. What they might not realize is that fans of the books have amassed dozens and dozens of predictions and theories that cover a wide range of characters.
Some of these guesses seem close to the mark, like the widely accepted assumption about Jon Snow's true parentage. Other theories have more of a conspiracy feel to them — loosely connecting threads and unabashedly stretching the imagination. But there is one theory that rises above all others in the realm of insanity (bordering on genius). We're talking about the "Cleganebowl."
It goes a little something like this:
Sandor "The Hound" Clegane is going to return to King's Landing in order to fight his brother, Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane, to the death in a trial by combat for Cersei Lannister.
[Insert air horn noise here.] hbogo.com This may sound a bit bizarre to those who have been following the show.
Wasn't The Hound left for dead in season four? And isn't The Mountain lying under a sheet in some creepy guy's laboratory? Even if they're both alive, why should I care if they fight?
All this, and more, to come.
First let's look at why this theory is relevant right now based on events from season five and heading into season six.
A champion for the crown
Lancel and the High Sparrow look on as Cersei is dragged to a cell. hbogo.com In season five, episode seven, we saw the High Sparrow arrest Cersei and throw her into a cell to await trial. We learned afterward she was imprisoned for her role in King Robert's death as well as her incestuous sexual habits with her twin brother, Jaime, and cousin, Lancel.
Now, on the show so far, we have never seen a trial concluded in a purely judicial manner. Tyrion has twice stood accused of crimes, and both times he demanded a trial by combat. A trial by combat allows the defendant to select a "champion" to represent him in a fight to the death against the selected champion of the prosecution. The guilt of the defendant is determined by whether their champion wins or loses.
*Minor spoilers ahead now for show-only fans*
From the books, we know that Cersei will demand a trial by combat. And her champion? Well this is where it gets a bit complicated.
The undead Mountain
Qyburn concocts a plan to keep The Mountain from dying. hbogo.com Gregor Clegane was called upon once to serve as champion for the crown. Back in season four, we watched in horror as Oberyn Martell battled against Gregor (commonly known as The Mountain). Oberyn managed to stab The Mountain with a poisoned spear, but it wasn't enough to win the fight. The Mountain crushed Oberyn's head in with his bare hands and won the trial by combat.
Since then, we have only had glimpses of The Mountain in what appeared to be various stages of experiments. Qyburn examined the poisoned wound and reassured Cersei that he has a plan to keep The Mountain alive.
When he was explaining to Cersei the gist of his plan, he warned her: "You should know. The process may change him, somewhat."
Then, in episode three of season five, we got a glimpse into Qyburn's laboratory when Cersei asked him to send a letter. While there, Cersei asked, "How's your work coming along?" (referring to The Mountain's healing).
Qyburn replied "Better than expected, but still a ways to go."
Then we see a large shrouded figure in the background, and suddenly it writhes under the sheet.
hbogo.com So we know that The Mountain is still alive in some capacity.
In the written series, Cersei writes to Qyburn from her prison cell and tells him to appoint a new member of the kingsguard — one that can serve as her champion for a trial by combat.
Though the show skipped over this specific request from Cersei, Qyburn does introduce a new member of the kingsguard in the season-five finale.
After Cersei's "walk of shame" on the show, Qyburn brings forward an enormous man wearing the gold kingsguard uniform. His face beneath the helmet looks bluish-gray, and his eyes are a weird bloodshot red. The knight is likely none other than a zombified version of The Mountain that Qyburn has been experimenting on.
In the books, Qyburn calls the undead Mountain "Ser Robert Strong." HBO Who else in King's Landing is that massive? Plus Qyburn tells Cersei that the unnamed knight will not speak. "If it please your grace, he has taken a holy vow of silence," Qyburn says on the show. "He has sworn that he will not speak until all his grace's enemies are dead, and evil has been driven from the realm."
That's a pretty good excuse to keep people from asking an undead dude to talk.
So Cersei has her champion. But what about the Faith?
The Faith's champion
In order to understand why fans think Sandor "The Hound" Clegane will be named the Faith's champion, we must explore a tangential theory known as "the Gravedigger." YouTube user Alt Shift X made a popular visual explanation of the theory — you can watch the full video here.
The basics of this theory center on The Hound, and how in both the book series and the show he is never actually seen dead. The last time we saw him on the show was in the season-four finale, when Arya left him grievously wounded. This same scenario happens in the books, though the fight that leaves him injured is different.
The Hound's face is scarred from burns he sustained when his brother, The Mountain, shoved his face into a fire. Helen Sloan / HBO In the books, Brienne of Tarth is wandering the country, looking for The Hound and (she hopes) Sansa or Arya. She goes to a place called the Quiet Isle, a sort of monastery for brothers of the Faith, and speaks to the Elder Brother.
This Elder Brother knows much about The Hound and admits that he came across him while wounded and did his best to help him. Brienne then notices a very large man at the monastery who is digging graves. His head and face are almost completely covered, but Brienne can tell he is limping from what could be a healing leg wound (the exact type that The Hound sustained).
The Hound's horse is at the Quiet Isle stables — another hint that The Hound is likely nearby. His horse is notorious for being uncontrollable by any other than The Hound himself.
Arya left The Hound to die of brutal wounds, after refusing to mercy-kill him. Helen Sloan/HBO Lastly, the Elder Brother is very vague when discussing The Hound's supposed death. As Alt Shift X puts it, "The most he'll say about Sandor Clegane is that he's "at rest." So what the Elder Brother could be getting at is that the hateful, violent part of Sandor Clegane, called the Hound, is metaphorically dead, leaving Sandor Clegane "at rest," and most importantly for us, literally alive.
So the Gravedigger theory infers that not only is The Hound alive, but he has now been brought into the Faith and serves them as Sandor Clegane.
Cleganebowl and the hype that won't die
These two separate incidences — zombie Mountain and gravedigging Hound — have combined to give birth to the Cleganebowl theory.
It started in 2013, when a 4chan thread about "Game of Thrones" prompted a user to submit their theory.
The title for the theory likely was inspired by the 2013 NFL Superbowl when the coaches of the opposing teams also happened to be brothers: Jim and John Harbaugh. Football fans and sports announcers quickly nicknamed the game "The Harbowl."
Since The Hound and The Mountain are brothers, and the theory assumes they will have an epic fight, Cleganebowl is the best-fitting title. They share the same last name — Sandor and Gregor Clegane — and this trial by combat would basically be the equivalent of a Westerosi Superbowl.
This original 4Chan thread references the "Valonquar" prophecy, which we explained more here. The gist of it is that Cersei went to a fortune-teller when she was younger and was told that she would be killed by "the Valonqar." That is a term that means "younger brother."
So the Cleganebowl theory postulates that The Hound is the younger brother in the scenario, and his victory will lead to Cersei's execution.
Believers in the Cleganebowl are a unique brand of fans. The tagline that generally follows any online allusions to the involved characters is a simple: "GET HYPE." An entire subreddit is dedicated to the converted believers, and this Google search history shows the spikes of interest over the years.
Cleaganebowl subscribers have a flair for the unique. There is a group of YouTube videos that mash up footage from the show with glaring strobe-text and an intense hip-hop/dubstep/electronic music soundtrack. Here are some of the top-viewed ones [Warning: NSFW language, loud music, and lots of airhorns].
Cleganebowl is such a popular theory not just because of its outlandish fan base, but because it would actually be really awesome to watch play out. The Hound and The Mountain are two of Westeros' renowned fighters with a lot of anger to spare. They have an intense rivalry (remember it was The Mountain who disfigured The Hound's face when they were children) that would make a fight to the death extremely intense.
Airhorns and Cleganebowl-hype meters aside, there is sufficient evidence for the two main components of the theory. The Mountain is most likely Ser Robert Strong and will represent Cersei in her trial by combat. It is also likely that The Hound is alive and living on the Quiet Isle.
So far, season five all but confirmed The Mountain's return. And — get hype — because the actor who plays The Hound (Rory McCann) was spotted in Northern Ireland during season-six filming. Whether The Hound will truly resurface on the show is another story, but those who believe the hype will certainly wait with bated breath to see if this insane theory comes true.

Game of Thrones – Dire Wolves
In the beginning of the series the Stark family comes across a slain dire wolf mother and six puppies. The initial order is to kill the puppies so no more dire wolves exist in the kingdom but the children take it as a sign since the House Stark emblem is a wolf. The five legitemate children get a wolf pup each and later a sixth puppy is found, a runt, which is given to John Snow (the bastard son).
A dire wolf is an extinct species of wolf (extinct about 10,000 years ago) that dominated southern North America, Central America, and northern and western South America. Unlike the Grey Wolf and other North American species that have European ancestors, it is believed that the Dire Wolf evolved on the western hemisphere along with the coyote. It is believed that the wolf was much larger than today’s wolves (about five feet long and weighing about 240 pounds) and due to the large brain it is also believed that they were more intelligent than today’s wolf. Today they are very popular in fantasy and role playing games.
In Game of Thrones, they are Northern Inuit dogs. The Northern Inuit dog is a breed that was created in the UK in the 1980’s (it became an official breed of dog in 1998). The breed is extremely friendly, has a great nose, and they can also be known for their stamina. Despite the dire wolves actions in the show, Northern Inuits typically do not make good guard dogs nor are they aggressive, they’ll usually submit if challenged. They do become very attached to their pack and can be suseptible to seperation anxiety if left alone.
Sansa Stark named her wolf “Lady“. Lady was played by Zunni from Mahlek Northern Inuit Dogs. (Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa in the series, adopted Lady as her own pet when the series wrapped).
Arya Stark named her wolf “Nymeria” after a warrior princess.
Bran Stark named his wolf “Summer” after he woke up from a coma.
Jon Snow (the bastard son) received a runt albino pup and he named it “Ghost“.
Also, Sully and Zuis (also from Mahlek) played two of the puppies.
James P Warren is credited for being the head animal trainer.

not a history of that country.

Ser Jorah Mormont is an exiled knight from the North of Westeros. Jorah inherited the lordship of Bear Island at a young age, and after his first marriage of ten years ended after three miscarriages, he received multiple marriage offers. Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands rose in rebellion before Jorah could make his decision, and when the banner were called, Jorah travelled south to fight the ironborn. He distinguished himself in battle, and was knighted as a reward. During the tourney held at Lannisport to celebrate the victory, Jorah met the southern Lynesse Hightower and fell in love with her. After Jorah asked Lynesse's father, Lord Leyton Hightower, for Lynesse's hand in marriage, the two were married at Lannisport.
Their happiness lasted a fortnight, as Lynesse was unprepared for life on the harsh and isolated Bear Island. Jorah attempted to reproduce the lifestyle his wife was accustomed to by lavishing her with expensive gifts, but drove himself into financial ruin as a result. In an attempt to gain money, Jorah sold poachers he had caught to a Tyroshi slaver. However, his liege lord, Eddard Stark, the Warden of the North, learned about this, and travelled to Bear Island to carry out the punishment for the crime of slavery. By the time he arrived, Jorah and Lynesse had already fled to Lys. Jorah became a sellsword and left Lys to battle the Braavosi, but discovered upon his return that Lynesse had become the lover of Tregar Ormollen, who forced Jora to give up Lynesse and leave Lys. Jorah traveled further through the Free Cities, and even to Vaes Dothrak, but continued to long for home. Eventually, he ends up in Pentos, employed by King Robert I Baratheon's master of whisperers Varys, where he crosses paths with the exiled Viserys Targaryen and his young sister Daenerys. Read more.
