Description

The Weimaraner is a moderately large, athletic, working dog. The medium-sized head has a moderate stop with a medial line going down the forehead. The nose is gray and the teeth meet in a scissors bite. The somewhat wide-set eyes come in shades of light amber, gray or blue-gray. The high-set ears are long and pendant, folded forward and hanging down along the sides of the head. The front legs are straight with webbed, compact feet. The toenails are gray or amber in color. The tail is customarily docked to 1 ½ inches (4 cm) when the dog is two days old. Note: docking tails is illegal in most parts of Europe. Dewclaws are usually removed. The topline slopes gently downward from the shoulders to the rump. The short, smooth coat is tight against the whole body and comes in shades of mouse-gray to silver-gray, blending with darker shades on the body and lighter shades on the head and ears. It also comes in a rarer longhaired variety (FCI Group 7). All shades of gray are accepted. There is sometimes a small white marking on the chest.

Temperament

The Weimaraner is happy, loving, intelligent, cheerful and affectionate. It is good with children. Without the proper exercise it will be very rambunctious and difficult to control. This breed learns quickly but will get bored if the training is the same thing over and over again. This breed needs firm, experienced training starting at puppyhood, with an owner who understands how to be a dog's pack leader, or it can become stubborn and willful. Without this proper leadership, it can become combative with other dogs. This hunting dog has a strong prey instinct and should not be trusted with small non-canine animals such as hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs. Socialized well with people, places, things and other animals. Brave, protective and loyal, the Weimaraner makes a good guard and watchdog. Weimaraners absolutely crave leadership. They want to know what is expected of them and for how long. If this is not made consistently clear, they will not be stable minded, may be stressed, possibly developing separation anxiety, becoming destructive and restless. Owners should not be harsh, but calm with a natural air of authority to their demeanor. These things are instinctually essential to having a happy, behaved, balanced dog. Give your Weim plenty of extensive exercise, or he will become very restless and over-excited. Because this breed is so full of energy, the first thing it needs to learn is sit. This will help prevent jumping, as this is a strong dog and will knock over the elderly or children by accident. This breed especially should not be hit to discipline, as they become wary easily. Once they have a fear of someone/something, they look to avoid and training is difficult. They are so eager to please and motivated by reward (food or praise) that once a trick is learned, the dog will leap to repeat for praise. Although, they are often mistaken as dumb, because they have such focus, if the trick or owner’s request isn't their focus at the time, it will not occur! Spend a lot of time with short-leash walking, next to you. If left to run ahead the Weimaraner will pull like a train and start to believe it is alpha, as pack leader goes first. This breed likes to bark, and needs to be corrected if it becomes excessive. Very hardy, with a good sense of smell, and a passionate worker, the Weimaraner can be used for all kinds of hunting.

Height, Weight

Height: Males 24 - 27 inches (61 - 69 cm) Females 22 - 25 inches (56 - 63 cm)

Weight: Males 55 - 70 pounds (25 - 32 kg) Females 50 - 65 pounds (23 - 29 kg)

Health Problems

Prone to bloat; it is better to feed them two or three small meals a day rather than one large meal. Also can be prone to hip dysplasia and hypertropic osteodystrophy (excessive rapid growth). Also prone to mast cell tumors.

Living Conditions

Weimaraners will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. They are relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least a large yard. They are not suited to outdoor kennel life.

These are powerful working dogs with great stamina. They need to be taken for a daily, long walk or jog. In addition, they need plenty of opportunities to run free. Do not exercise them after meals. It is best to feed a dog after a long walk, as soon as it cools down.

Life Expectancy

About 10-14 years

Litter Size

About 6 to 8 puppies

The smooth, shorthaired coat is easy to keep in peak condition. Brush with a firm bristle brush, and dry shampoo occasionally. Bathe in mild soap only when necessary. A rub over with a chamois will make the coat gleam. Inspect the feet and mouth for damage after work or exercise sessions. Keep the nails trimmed. This breed is an average shedder.

The breed is several centuries old, is derived from the same selective stock as other German hunting breeds and is a descendant of the Bloodhound. The Weimaraner is a good all-around hunting dog and an excellent pointer. It was originally used as a big-game hunter for bear, deer and wolves, but is used more today as a birddog and even a water retriever. A Weimaraner appeared in a Van Dyck painting from the early 1600s. Howard Knight, who founded the first American Weimaraner breed club, imported the dogs to the United States in 1929. The popular children's TV show Sesame Street has been known to plays skits with this breed dressed up in human clothes. The Weimaraner was first recognized by the AKC in 1943. Some of its talents include: hunting, tracking, retrieving, pointing, watchdog, guarding, police work, service for the disabled, search and rescue and agility.

Bodie the Weimaraner at 3 1/2 years old—"Bodie is a 3½–year-old Weimaraner. He is very sweet, yet very protective. He is an active boy and he loves to run and play ball. He is a great agility dog. He is very smart. He once got up on the counter and opened the Pop Tarts box and opened the wrappers just like a human. I am not saying that is good, but that is smart. He also loves to sleep in the bed with me. When he is not sleeping he is outside. He loves to eat as well. I put the bowl out and he eats all very quickly. He is a love bug and a great friend."

Mystic Hollow Weimaraners, Alberta, Canada

"Panu zum Laubwald is a longhaired Weimaraner bred by Dr. Hans Schmidt of Germany. I call him Piezl because of his initials, PZL."

"This is our Weimaraner at 2 1/2 months old. His name is Charlie! He has a very good temperament. He is extremely smart, great with people, cats, dogs and is a momma's boy! Hey absolutely loves playing with our 10-month-old cat. Charlie will lie on his back with his feet up in the air and let the cat pounce, play and roughhouse on his stomach, head and ears. Charlie mimics what the cat does, too. Charlie will paw at the cat's face and body, just like cats paw at floor model balls on a tall spring. It is very funny and cute to watch.

"Charlie likes pretty much anything that he can play with such as. regular dog toys, cats, paper towel rolls, plastic cups, rubber rings and especially butcher quality beef bones and ribs. Those are his favorite!

"There isn't much that Charlie doesn't like. However, he isn't too fond of being in his crate (we are working every day to get him used to it). He is a puppy still and as for all puppies, the one thing they don't like to hear is "no". Ha! He knows what it means and 95% of the time he obeys. Every now and then he likes to push his limits, but quickly learns that he is part of the pack and not the pack leader (thanks, Cesar!).

"Good habits: He knows where to go to the bathroom. That's always a plus!

"Bad habits: Every chance he gets when he is outside is loves to find rocks to chew on. He also loves wood.

"Exercise: He gets lots of it! We live on a large hobby farm with a 5-acre fenced-in yard. In addition, he gets lots of walks and loves to run!

"I believe that Charlie is making great strides every day to becoming a well-balanced dog. He's a puppy, so every day is a new learning experience, adventure and new path to becoming well balanced.

"I watch Cesar Millan aka the "Dog Whisperer." I think what he does is fascinating and wonderful. One of the many things I learn and use by watching his show is that if the human is calm/assertive your dog will have a waaaay better chance of being calm/assertive. Especially when you are trying to raise a puppy. Charlie has responded very well with me using the calm/assertive technique. He listens much better and the most important thing is that Charlie and I are much happier!"

Weimaraner, korthåret

MENTALITET

Der forekommer to varianter.

Information and Pictures

Kahn the Great Weimar at 1 year old—"Kahn is an amazing dog, quite the athlete and we can't wait until he is old enough to compete in agility, probably obedience and tracking too. We'll just have to see which he enjoys. Right now he enjoys all his training. He has boundless energy and is so powerful and agile. He is all muscle and is very intelligent as well. Makes him a bit hardheaded at times especially now that he has hit his "teenager stage" but he learns so quickly. He loves training of all kinds and is just so much fun. We love him so much."

Description

The Great Weimar is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Great Dane and the Weimaraner. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

Carolines Hundeblogg

More information on the Weimaraner:

Weimaraner

The Weimaraner is a silver-grey breed of dog developed originally in early 19th century for hunting. Early Weimaraners were used by royalty for hunting large game, such as boar, bears, deer, and foxes. As the popularity of large game hunting began to decline, Weimaraners were used for hunting smaller animals, like fowl, rabbits, and foxes. Rather than having a specific purpose such as pointing or flushing, the Weimaraner is an all purpose gun dog. The Weimaraner is loyal and loving to his family, an incredible hunter, and a fearless guardian of his family and territory. The name comes from the Grand Duke of Weimar, Karl August, whose court enjoyed hunting.

The Weimaraner is elegant, noble, and athletic in appearance. All parts of the dog should be in balance with each other, creating a form that is pleasing to the eye. It must be capable of working in the field, regardless of whether it is from show stock or hunting stock, and faults that will interfere with working ability are heavily penalized.

The tails are kept short. In some cases, tails are docked and dewclaws are removed, the tail usually docked at birth to a third of its natural length.

Coat and color

This breed’s short and very smooth gray coat and its unusual eyes give it a regal appearance different from any other breed. However, the breed has been deemed very similar to the Vizsla. The eyes may be light amber, gray, or blue-gray. The coat may range from mouse-gray to silver-gray. Where the fur is thin or non-existent, inside the ears or on the lips, for example, the skin should be a pinkish "flesh" tone rather than white or black.

The silvery-gray colour is rare in dogs and is the result of breeding for a recessive gene. It has also lent the breed the nickname ‘silver ghost’ or ‘gray ghost.’ The coat is extremely low maintenance; it is short, hard, and smooth to the touch.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) standard, a distinctly blue or black coat is an automatic disqualification, though a small white marking in the chest area only is permitted.

There is a long-haired variety that is recognized by most kennel clubs around the world except in North America. The long-haired Weimaraner has a silky coat, with – contrary to the short coated variety – an undocked, feathered tail. The gene is recessive, so breeding will produce some long-haired puppies only if both parents carry the recessive longhair gene.

According to the AKC standard, the male Weimaraner stands between 25 and 27 inches (63-68 cm) at the withers.

Females are between 23 and 25 inches (58-63 cm). Of course, there are many dogs taller or shorter than the breed standard. The breed is not heavy for its height, and males normally weigh roughly 70-85 pounds. Females are generally between 55-70 lbs(25-32kgs). A Weimaraner carries its weight proudly and gives the appearance of a muscular, athletic dog.

Temperament

Weimaraners are fast and powerful dogs, but are also suitable home animals given appropriate training & exercise. These dogs are not as sociable towards strangers as other hunting dogs such as Labradors and Golden Retrievers. Weimaraners are very protective of their family and can be very territorial. They can be aloof to strangers, and must be thoroughly socialized when young to prevent aggression. They are also highly intelligent, sensitive and problem-solving animals, which earned them an epithet "dog with a human brain". From adolescence, a Weimaraner requires extensive exercise in keeping with an energetic hunting dog breed and prized for their physical endurance and stamina. No walk is too far, and they will appreciate games and play in addition. An active owner is more likely to provide the vigorous exercising, games, or running that this breed absolutely requires. Weimaraners are high-strung and often wear out their owners, requiring appropriate training to learn how to calm them and to help them learn to control their behavior. Owners need patience and consistent, firm (yet kind) training, as this breed is particularly rambunctious during the first year and a half of its life. This breed is known for having a penchant for stealing food from table and counter tops whenever given the chance. Like many breeds, untrained and unconfined young dogs often create their own fun when left alone, such as chewing house quarters and furniture. Thus, many that are abandoned have behavioural issues as a result of isolation and inferior exercise.

It should never be forgotten that the Weimaraner is a hunting dog and therefore has a strong, instinctive prey drive. Weimaraners will sometimes tolerate cats, as long as they are introduced to the cats as puppies, but many will chase and frequently kill almost any small animal that enters their garden or backyard. In rural areas, most Weimaraners will not hesitate to chase deer or sheep. However, with good training, these instincts can be curtailed to some degree. A properly trained Weimaraner is a wonderful companion that will never leave its master’s side.

The Weimaraner is a deep-chested dog, which makes them a breed which is high on the list of dogs affected by bloat (gastric torsion). This a very serious condition that causes death when left untreated. It occurs when the stomach twists itself, thereby pinching off the routes of food traveling in or out. Symptoms include a dog showing signs of distress, discomfort, and a swollen stomach. Immediate medical attention is imperative when bloat occurs and surgery is usually the only option. One way to help prevent bloat is to spread out the Weimaraner’s feedings to at least twice daily and to avoid any rigorous exercise right after feedings. Weimaraner owners might never see this problem in their dogs but should be familiar with the ailment and keep emergency vet numbers handy. Hip dysplasia is a major concern among Weimaraners, as with most large breeds of dog. It is generally recommended to acquire Weims only from breeders who have their dog’s hips tested using OFA or PennHIP methods. Other health issues include:

* Von Willebrands Disease

* Progressive retinal atrophy

Behavior Disorders

Those familiar with the breed acknowledge two common behavioral disorders.

The first common behavior disorder is the proclivity of many Weimaraners to suffer from severe separation anxiety. Manifestations of this behavior disorder include panicked efforts to rejoin the owner when separation occurs, excessive drooling, destructive behaviors, and associated injuries such as broken teeth or cut lips. Behavior modification training and medications may reduce the severity of symptoms associated with this disorder in some Weimaraners. However, the breed is generally refractory to such treatment and behavior modification training efforts. As individuals of the breed age the severity of separation anxiety symptoms decrease somewhat, but do not completely abate.

The second common behavior disorder is unacceptable aggression in some Weimaraners. Early and extensive socialization of young dogs can prevent this. However, as the original purpose of the breed was to assist in hunting small to large forest game (fowl & small mammals to boar, elk & bears) and to provide personal as well as property protection a certain amount of aggression is innate to the breed.

Professional training

Professional training is beneficial, particularly for less-experienced owners. This includes behaviours towards other family pets. Depending upon training they can be quite aggressive towards other dogs, but they are a loyal, playful and affectionate pet and an alert and friendly member of the family. Although visitors are likely to be licked rather than warned away, the Weimaraner does not miss a trick and is always aware of its surroundings and is ready to protect its family and territory in a heartbeat. Extensive socialization is critical for this breed. Prospective owners should note that the Weimaraner is not recommended for families with young children as it is usually boisterous, sometimes hyperactive. If you train them at an early age with young children then they will get used to them. The same goes with other pets. This is also a breed with tremendous personality, charm and stubbornness.

Bred circa the year 1810 in Germany. Breeder Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar, Germany.

Dog, thereby named the Weimaraner. The Weimarner was bred from the Rothund/ Rottnshund/ Red Hound and the Yagd Hund/ Grosse Danische Yagd Hund/ Great Dane. A German website lists the first US export as 1928. There is also discussion of the Weimaraner being popular with US troops who brought dogs to the US circa 1945. In Europe and the US the weimaraner history is considered an exceptional breed. The dog is known to be excellent in speed, tracking, scenting, pointing, retrieving, watchdogging, and police work. It has been called the dog with the human brain. A sporting group dog in US competition. AKC in 1943.

Put on the computer what the public asks for, not everything about the US.

I asked for a total medal count. I have been looking for 20 minutes and still cannot find it.

I also asked for a specific medal count for a specific country and got a history of when they first started to compete in the Olympics. I asked for a medal count for 2018, as of today,

not a history of that country.

You don't even accept what I have asked.

    Weimaraner

UTILIZATION: Versatile Hunting, Shooting, Pointing Dog.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: There are numerous theories regarding the origin of the Weimaraner Pointing dog. Only so much is certain: That the Weimaraner, which at the time still contained a great deal of liam hound blood, was already kept at the Weimar court in the first third of the 19th century.

In the middle of the century, before pure breeding was started, breeding was mainly in the hands of professional hunters and game keepers in central Germany, mostly in the regions round Weimar and in Thuringia. As the days of the liam hounds passed, the dogs were crossed with the “Hühnerhund” and breeding was continued with this cross. From about 1890 on, the breed was produced according to a plan and regarded as suitable for inclusion in a stud book. Apart from the short haired Weimaraner, a long haired variety occurred, if only singly, since the turn of the century. Since being admitted to the stud book, the Weimaraner has been pure bred, remaining mostly free from crosses with any other breeds, in particular, Pointers. Therefore the Weimaraner is likely to be the oldest German “pointing” breed, which has been pure bred for about a hundred years.

GENERAL APPEARANCE: Medium to large size hunting/shooting dog, functional working type, pleasing in shape, sinewy and muscular. Difference in type between dogs and bitches easily distinguished.

IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS: Length of body to height at withers approximately 12:11. Proportions of the head: From tip of nose to stop slightly longer than from stop to occiput. Forehand: Length of elbow to pastern and length of elbow to point of withers about equal.

BEHAVIOR AND CHARACTER: Versatile easily trained, steady and passionate hunting / shooting dog. Persevering in search, yet not too lively. Remarkable ability to pick up scent. Ready to seize game and other prey; also able to do man work, yet not aggressive. Reliable pointer and worker in water. Remarkable inclination to work after game is shot.

Cranial Region: In balance with size of body and facial region. Broader in dogs than bitches, yet in both, the relationship between width of cranial region to total length of head must be in good proportion. Median groove in forehead. Slight to moderately protruding occipital bone. Zygomatic arches easily traceable behind the eyes. Stop extremely slight.

Nose: Noseleather large, protruding over the underjaw. Dark flesh color, merging gradually into gray towards the back.

Muzzle: Long and, specially in the male, powerful, appearing almost angular. Region of canines and carnassial teethes equally strong. Bridge of nose straight, often slightly arched, never with a down-ward curve.

Flews: Moderately deep, flesh colored, as are the gums. Tight fitting.

Cheeks: Muscular, clearly defined. Definitely “clean” head.

Teeth: Complete, regular and strong. Top and bottom incisors touching (scissor bite).

Eyes: Amber color, dark to pale, with intelligent expression. Sky-blue in puppies. Round, barely slanting. Lids well fitting.

Ears: Lobular, broad and fairly long, just reaching to corner of mouth. Set on high and narrow, forming a rounded off point at tip. In alertness, turned slightly forward, folded.

NECK: Noble appearance and carriage. Upper line arched in profile. Muscular, nearly round, not too short, clean cut. Becoming stronger towards the shoulders and merging harmoniously into the back and chest.

Topline: From the arched neckline, over the well defined withers the topline merges gradually into the relatively long, firm back.

    Withers: Well defined.

Back: Firm and muscular, without a dip. Not running up towards the rear. A slightly long back, a breed characteristic, is not a fault.

Rump: Pelvis long and moderately sloped.

Chest: Strong but not unduly broad, with sufficient depth to reach almost to elbows and of sufficient length. Well sprung without being barrel-shaped and with long ribs. Brisket well developed.

Belly Line: Rising slightly, but belly not tucked up.

Tail: Set on slightly lower than with other similar breeds. Tail strong and well coated.

Carried hanging down in repose. When alert or working, carried level or higher.

General: High on leg, sinewy, straight and parallel, but not standing wide.

Shoulders: Long and sloping. Well fitting, strongly muscled. Well angulated shoulder joint.

Upper Arm: Sloping, sufficiently long and strong.

Elbows: Free and lying parallel to median plane of body. Turned neither in nor out.

Fore Arm: Long, straight and vertical.

    Pastern joint: Strong and taut.

    Pastern: Sinewy, slightly sloping.

Front Feet: Firm and strong. Standing straight in relation to median plane of body. Toes arched. Longish middle toes are a breed characteristic and therefore not a fault. Nails light to dark gray. Pads well pigmented, coarse.

General: High on leg, sinewy i.e. well muscled. Standing parallel, turning neither in nor out.

Upper Thigh: Sufficiently long, well muscled.

    Stifle: Strong and taut.

Lower Thigh: Long with clearly visible tendons.

    Hockjoint: Strong and taut.

Hock: Sinewy, almost vertical in position.

Hind Feet: Tight and firm, without dew-claws, otherwise like front feet.

GAIT / MOVEMENT: Movement in all gaits is ground covering and smooth. Hind and front legs set parallel to each other. Gallop long and flat. Back remains straight when trotting. Pacing is undesirable.

SKIN: Strong. Close, but not too tight fitting.

    Make Up of Coat:

    • Short Hair: Short (but longer and thicker than with most comparable breeds), strong, very dense, smooth lying top coat. Without or with only very sparse undercoat.
    • Longhaired: Soft, long topcoat with or without undercoat. Smooth or slightly wavy. Long flowing hair at ear set on . Velvety hair is permissible on tips of leathers. Length of coat on flanks 3 – 5 cm. On lower side of neck, chest and belly, generally somewhat longer. Good feathering and breeching, yet less long towards ground. Tail with good flag. Feathering between toes. Hair on head less long. A type of coat similar to a double-coat (Stockhaar) with medium length, dense, close fitting top coat, thick undercoat and moderately developed feathering and breeching, sometimes occurs in dogs of mixed ancestry.

COLOR: Silver, roe or mouse gray, as well as shades of these colors. Head and ears generally slightly paler. Only small white markings on chest and toes permitted. Sometimes a more or less defined dark eel stripe occurs along the back. Dogs with definite reddish-yellow marking may only be given the classification “good”. Brown marking is a serious fault.

    HEIGHT AND WEIGHT:

    Height at withers:

    Dogs: 59 – 7O cm (ideal measurement 62 – 67 cm). Bitches: 57 – 65 cm (ideal measurement 59 – 63 cm).

    Bitches: about 25 – 35 kg.

FAULTS: Any departure from the above points is to be regarded as a fault whose seriousness is to be regarded in exact proportion to its degree.

    • Clear deviation from type. Untypical sexual characteristics.
    • Gross deviation from correct proportions.
    • Slight deficiency in temperament.
    • Gross deviations from size and proportions.
    • Facial region: Gross deviations e.g. too strong flews, short or pointed muzzle.
    • Jaws and teeth: Lack of more than two P1 or M3.
    • Eyes: Light faults in eye lid above all light and unilateral faults.
    • Ears: Definitely short or long, not turned.
    • Throatiness (dewlap), great deviation in neck shape and muscle.
    • Back: Definite sway or roach back. Rump higher than withers.
    • Chest, Belly: Barrel shaped chest. Insufficient depth or length of chest. Tucked up belly.
    • Sexual organs: distinct departure from normal in testicle shape, size or consistency.
    • Gross anomalies in stance i.e. lack of angulation, out at elbows, splay feet.
    • Pronounced bow legs or cow hocks.
    • Bad movement in different gaits, also lack of free forward movement or drive, pacing.
    • Serious deficiencies i.e. skin very fine or very coarse.
    • Mixture of coat varieties defined in the standard.
    • Lack of feathering on belly or leathers. Widely spread woolly coat in short hair Weimaraner or curly or sparse feathering in long hair variety.
    • Departure from shades of gray, such as yellow or brownish. Brown marking.
    • Strong departure from correct height or weight. e.g. more than 2 cm from average.
    • Other serious faults.

    • Completely untypical, above all too heavy or too light in build.
    • Completely out of proportion.
    • Faulty temperament i.e. shy or nervous.
    • Absolutely untypical bulldog – type head.
    • Facial Region: Absolutely untypical i.e. completely curved nose bridge.
    • Jaws and teeth: Overshot, undershot, missing further teeth other than quoted.
    • Eyes: Entropion, Ectropion.
    • Ears: Absolutely untypical, i.e. stand-off.
    • Particularly pronounced dewlap.

    • Definitely over or under size.
    • Other malformation. Illnesses which must be considered hereditary, i.e. Epilepsy.

The compilers can, naturally, not list all faults which occur, the above are to be regarded as examples.
